Elgana – a Wiki

General

Etymology

“Elgana” means “wandering goddess, a magical protector” with the “wandering goddess” referring to the Lunar Goddess Ikyliell which is the bigger of the two moons that weave around the torus planets of Elgana. “El” refers to “protector”, “gan” is “magick”, “ana” is “wandering goddess”. (Read more: How to Create Fantasy Names with Wikitionary)

Origins of Life

There are many theories about how life on Elgana began both magically and scientifically. There is said to have been two founding spirits, Aurvandil and Skaavandil.

Aurvandil is the luminous wanderer, a black-furred Kattaluna with golden lunar magick shining through his fur and etching patterns of vines and geometrical shapes on his body. Aurvandil represents Ikyliell, the moon of light, but is not equal to her, and he represents light, the moonstone, and the Kattaluna race.

Skaavandil is the shadow wanderer, a yellow-gold-furred wolf-like creature with antler and black umbra magick shining through her fur and etching vines and geometrical patterns on her body. She is said to be the first ever Ilvagi to walk the land. Skaavandil represents Nyliell, the moon of shadow, but is not equal to him, and she represents shadow, the bloodstone, and the Ilvagi race.

Aurvandil and Skaavandil are counterparts of each other, therefore, creating a balance upon Elgana with their presences. The stories of Aurvandil and Skaavandil have made it into many bedtime stories and stories about overcoming differences or going against the norm. The real truth of their relationship, however, remains much of a mystery, but some theories can be inferred from the stories.

Structure of Elgana

Elgana is a planet made up of torus planets one inside the other with breathable space in between. The torus planets were attracted to one another through the pull of magick density, and also gravitational pull. Citizens of Elgana call the the torus planets Rings, for their ring shape. For example, Torus Planet 1 is called the First Ring. This was started by Humans who like to give silly names to things.

Torus Planet 1:

Innermost, smallest torus planet. Mostly desert plains. Humans inhabit.

It’s mixture of traditional and modern architecture, sometimes built on top of each other. The largest portal station, Syaraize Portal Station, exists here. The hole in the middle of torus planet 1 has claimed many citizens. (Read more: What’s in the hole of Elgana? Theories and Speculations)

Torus Planet 2:

Hybrids inhabit this torus planet. A mix of modern and traditional architecture. Towering skyscrapers, roads for vehicles, and a train system. Has vast fields and big lakes. High Collection Headquarters located here. (Read more: Structure of High Collection Headquarters)

Torus Planet 3:

The most environmentally diverse torus planet with grassy fields, rocky plains, a desert, forests, and swamplands. The Kattaluna race lives here separated into four clans, and corralled by a magical, poisonous wall called Bloodstone.

Torus Planet 4:

Sorcerers have locked the portal station exit into their torus planet because they dislike other races coming in. Many native Elganians used to live here and their traditional stone fortresses and cottages can still be seen mixed with more modern skyscrapers.

Torus planet 5:

The jail for all the species, and all entrances and exits are locked and closely monitored. It used to inhabit the Kaunlutha race but after their extinction, it was largely abandoned and left to criminals. Then the High Collection police force took it over and turned it into what is now known as the Jail Ring (“ring” for the ring-shaped torus planet). Each race has a place for their own criminals. (Read more: Jail System of Elgana, law and order for six torus planets)

Torus Planet 6:

Outermost, largest torus planet which hugs all the other torus planets inside it. Ilvagis inhabit here. Massive volcanoes and lava fields in the south lead up to huge canyons and dry, red rock. The extreme north is dark, cold, and icy, and constantly snowing. It is said to lead to the realm of the Guardians which the chosen Guardians have magical access to. Species

Human

Humans are just like us living in a society similar to our own. These humans have come from a broken Earth to find a new place to habitat. Since many people from dark-haired and red-haired nations participated in the journey on the Life Ship (a grand ship that traveled generations to reach Elgana), many Elganian humans do end up being mostly dark-haired or red-haired individuals. Also, a lot of them do end up being darker-skinned since their primary place of living ended up being the dry, sunny, desert lands covering the torus planet 1 which is the innermost torus planet of Elgana. (Read more: Humans of Elgana – a Wiki)

Native Elganian:

The natives of Elgana are bipedal creatures that stand on two legs (but can run on four if they want to), have opposable thumbs, and also have intelligence at a slightly higher level than humans. They are all about a head taller than the average human, and most have some type of magick. Today, many sub-species of native Elganians have gone extinct. (Read more: Extinct Species of Native Elganians)

Hybrid:

Hybrids are a hybrid of the native Elganian bipedal creatures and Humans. Their ancestors mostly stem from the match-making systems between humans and the native Elganian bipedal creatures, or the slavery that humans implemented not long after arriving on Elgana. Hybrids have various sub-species and each sub-species has developed their own cultures more or less throughout the centuries. (Read more: Species of Hybrids in Elgana, and Hybrids of Elgana – a Wiki)

Kattaluna:

Blue-furred bipedal creatures which stand up on two legs (but can run on four if they want to), have opposable thumbs, and intelligence at a slightly higher level than humans. They have stripes, feline features, and also display many feline traits like opening their mouths to use their scent glands to detect more complex scents. They all have dark blue manes which they braid.

The Kattalunae are the last remaining native Elganians and are considered a race today. A battle with Ilvagis left them stuck in torus planet 3 corralled by a toxic wall called Bloodstone. (Read more: Kattaluna – a Wiki, and How Powerful Creatures Lost Everything or Battle of Light and Shadow, Kattaluna and Ilvagi)

Sorcerer:

Sorcerers were once plain, normal humans who discovered they could access the dense magick of torus planet 4, and slowly they learned how to harness their magick. These humans separated themselves from other humans and established the Sorcerer race. Later down the line, some Hybrids would also join them. Sorcerers have a unique outlook on life (Read more: How Sorcerers Think), and age slower because of their magick.

Sorcerers and humans kind of hate each other, but they also can’t do without the other. Sometimes Sorcerers have non-magical children and humans have magical children. They established a child-trading adoption system. (Read more: Human-borns & Sorcerer-borns, and Sorcerer – a Wiki)

Ilvagi:

An Ilvagi is a shapeshifting creature whose default form is a black cloud or a smoke cloud with two pupilless red eyes. Ilvagis are the only ones that can inhabit torus planet 6, the outermost torus planet that is a part of Elgana which is made up of toxic lava fields. Ilvagis are born from the shadows of lava. How? No one knows yet.

The Ilvagis use shadow magick, a quite powerful magick which makes them nearly immortal. They view themselves as a collective and use “we” or “us” as pronouns. Ilvagis have a very different culture compared to all other races. The most interesting is how they treat individuality and what it means to follow orders. (Read more: Army Ranks of Ilvagis, and Ilvagi – a Wiki)

Guardians of Elgana

The Guardians are citizens of Elgana chosen to protect the balance of the planet. Note that it says “balance”. This doesn’t necessarily mean the peace of Elgana, although of course, a peaceful planet is preferable.

The Guardians are magical and their strong magick makes them age a lot slower than normal, rendering them nearly immortal. Their quick-healing abilities also make them almost indestructible. Guardians can only die after the next Guardian is chosen.

Guardians are chosen by the Seven Stones of Virtue, also known as the Seven Stones. In the past, Guardians didn’t have much of a choice but to become Guardians. They would be called upon by the stone in dreams or by former Guardians and be forced to train and then prove themselves worthy.

But when choice was implemented, citizens could reject the stone and the stone would vanish and move on to the next candidate. After all, the world is huge and there are plenty to choose from.

Guardians aren’t allowed to tell other citizens that they are Guardians. It’s a rule that was created by the Chief Guardian to protect the Guardians from greedy citizens, and to live a normal life. (Read more: How do the Guardians Live?)

A lot of Guardians do happen to be citizens who live rather solitary lives, or who have little in stake if they have to suddenly up and leave to go protect the planet, so the rule is more for their protection. (Read more: The Role of the Guardians of Elgana).

How a Guardian is Chosen

There are seven stones of virtue: Moonstone (Strength/Kindness), Sapphire (Humility/Modesty/Calmness), Rose Quartz (Love/Forgiveness), Citrine (Justice/Honesty), Bloodstone (Courage/Trusting), Emerald (Knowledge/Wit/Patience), Padparadscha (Loyalty)

These might seem simple on the surface, but each virtue has layers and only someone who has those layers will be chosen. The only stone that has a permanent “holder” is the moonstone. This stone is held by the Chief Guardian Aurvandil. The Chief is eternal and he doesn’t change.

*Note: Stones aren’t “owned” as they freely leave one Guardian to find the next, or to escape corruption. Stones are “held” and the Guardian is called the “holder of the stone”. Stones can pass from one citizen to another to rid of corruption (Read more: Holding and Passing of the Seven Stones)

Stones appear in dreams of prospects–citizens who are chosen to become the next Guardian. There’s no strict schedule for when this happens, but the previous holder of the stone will get a heads-up that their stone is one the move.

The prospect will learn where the stone is and must embark on a journey to find it. Once found, the prospect begins the training at the hands of the stone’s current holder. After passing the test, the prospect will bond with the stone and become the next Guardian of that stone.

Choice was slowly implemented into the system of choosing a Guardian, and recent years, citizens can opt out if they don’t want to become a Guardian. Because let’s face it; it’s a big decision to become magically strong and live longer than everyone you love. (Read more: Choice in a Chosen World)

Enemies

Azarks are the counterpart of the Guardians and their enemies. Each virtue can be flipped into an “evil” and so, the seven stones are sometimes referred to as the Seven Stones of Virtues and Evils. Justice opposite Vengeance, Love opposite Hate, Patience opposite Impatience, for example. Azarks cannot be defeated but can be sealed away. This means that they do have the potential to return time and again when the balance of Elgana is threatened.

Guardians, when corrupted, have turned into Azarks which is how Azarks were created. They were first called “destructive corruption”. (Read more: What are Azarks? Don’t Say the Name)

Major Historical Events

Below are some major historical events in chronological order. To read more about each, click on anywhere it says “read more” or on the keywords.

Human Invasion

Humans came from Earth on the Life Ship because Earth had collapsed so much, they pulled a WALL-E and took a bunch of people and up and left. However, only a bunch enough to start a colony. Many Humans still remain on Earth. (Read more: What Happened to the Home Planet of Elganian Humans?)

Anyway, a big moment in Elganian history is the invasion of Humans. I won’t go into great detail here, but Humans tried various ways to try to take over Elgana, but they were easily frightened by the magick. So, the Humans tried to go the peaceful route opting to trade knowledge while sneakily slowly trying to wipe an entire species off the planet. (Read more: Human-Elganian Match-Making: scientifically wiping a species from history)

Well, that went into a whole other direction (the new Human-Elganian Hybrids wanting to be their own race), and so, a full-out war happened. (Read more: Humans Invading Elgana created Hybrid Race)

The Human Invasion threw Elgana into further corruption (there were already greedy, terrible citizens the Guardians were dealing with), and on top of that, some Humans discovered they could use Elganian magick, and so, tried to establish themselves as another whole new species called Sorcerers. (Read more: Sorcerer – a Wiki)

Establishment of Five Craftsmen of Peace

To try to come to some agreement and live together peacefully, each race chose (however which way they wanted) a representative of their race to become a member of the Five Craftsmen of Peace. It was the Humans’ idea to do this which is why it’s not the Five Craftscitizen of Peace.

The Five Craftsmen would go on to establish where who would live, the rules of Elgana which all races could agree on (more or less), and they also created the first portal system of Elgana.

Portal System Created

Because of the nature of Elgana being made of six torus planets, one inside another, with breathable outer space between them (Read more: Theory on Elgana’s Breathable Space), it was natural that somewhere down the line, travel needed to become more accessible for every citizen.

The first portal to be created was the Edge Portal which sits between torus planet 6 (outermost) and 5. The reason it’s called the Edge Portal is because humans considered it to be at the edge of Elgana even though there’s a lot of debate as to what is considered the “edge” of Elgana.

Portals between the other torus planets were established after the Edge Portal when the Five Craftsmen decided there should be more portal travel and only the Five Craftsmen should be allowed to use ships for space travel for security reasons. (Read more: Space travel in Elgana)

Also, torus planet 5 was eventually turned into a “Jail Ring” (named after the ring-shaped torus planet), and no portal connects to this planet. Only those working in law and order are allowed to ride a ship to fly there.

Apart from portals between torus planets, Sorcerers and others who know magick, could create portals everywhere to get from place to place. It’s just that sometimes they would forget to close it. These are called “rogue portals”, and they are highly dangerous because you don’t know where it goes or if it’s stable enough to use. (Read more: Portals of Elgana)

One such rogue portal is quite famous because it has attached itself to the outside of the portal leading to torus planet 4 (where Sorcerers exclusively live). The portal is a doorway into a chaotic, magical, topsy-turvy world often referred to as a bubble world (if you viewed it from space you will see a translucent bubble attached to torus planet 4). It’s commonly known as the Forest Crup. It’s a massive Sorcerer’s-experiment dump. All the failed or dangerous experiments were thrown into this world illegally, and now it has become a wild place. (Read more: Secrets of The Forest Crup)

High Collection Established

The Five Craftsmen renamed as the High Collection (HC) because it’s not five representatives anymore. At some point, Ilvagis began to not cooperate with the rest of them. They would stop attending meetings and would rarely venture out of torus planet 6, so why keep them on? And so, the HC became the sole ruling power of Elgana. (Read more: Ilvagi Monarchy vs Elganian New Politics)

However, each race is allowed to pick their representative in anyway they want. Maybe there’s a test to past, or an election where citizens vote for their favorite candidate. Some representatives might change after 4 years or less, or more. Some representatives might not change until the citizen is willing to step down or retire. All depends on the race and their own political systems. (Read more: Ruler of the Entire World: What an Empire-Democracy looks like)

High Collection Police Faction: under HC are the HC police members. Each species has an HC police faction separate from their own police. Example, Sorcerers have their own HC police faction as well as the Sorcerer police faction. The former deals with anything that Sorcerers do which affect the whole world, and the latter deals with local crimes.

The jail system is a very interesting part of how law and order is put in place in a world that is separate in some aspects but whole in other aspects. There are rules that apply to all races and rules that only apply to some races but not others, so if you are citizen of Elgana, you need to know the rules of your race and of the planet. Punishment is also dealt in different ways and the death penalty is also done is differently for some races. For example, Sorcerers with strong magick heal fast and don’t die easily, so they have to be put to death in a different way. (Read more: Jail System of Elgana, law and order for six torus planets)

Racial Wars

Peace after the establishment of the High Collection didn’t last long and soon, Elgana was thrust into a myriad of battles. Each species was trying to establish themselves as a different race and trying to be the dominant one that has the most say in political affairs. This slew of battles are referred to as the “Racial Wars” or the “Battles of Species”. Some refer to it as the “Terrible Times”.

There were ten major battles in total, two of them being major long-lasting wars, although some historical records say there were as many as fifty including civil wars happening amongst humans and Hybrids. Can’t exactly say who started what, but more often than not, it all stems from the Human Invasion. By the time the Racial Wars happened some hundreds of years had gone by since the invasion, but many humans would feel they had to “make ancestors (first human settlers) proud” by trying to take over Elgana.

Of course, it didn’t work. But the effects of the racial wars left corruption rife on Elgana (remember the Azarks?) and the Chief Guardian Aurvandil had to take some drastic measures. (Read more: Lesson Learned through Creating Magical Scepter)

Magick of the World

Elgana is rife with magick. You can even say that it was almost created with magick. Some magick must be used often or it could weaken and die out (like exercising a muscle), and some magick never fades. Universally, the stronger the magick, the slower the aging process and the less likely the user will get sick or die from injuries.

Let’s get into the spectrum of magick, how citizens get their magick, and a brief introduction to the various types of magick in Elgana.

Spectrum of Magick

Magick is about balance on Elgana. On two ends of the spectrum are balanced magick and imbalanced magick.

Balanced magick is the perfect (but delicate) harmony of two opposites. Life and death, light and dark, etc. The center of the planet is speculated to be made of balanced magick which holds Elgana together.

Imbalanced magick on the other hand is skewed to one side—only light or only dark, or only hot or only cold. It can also be magick that slides between two polar opposites but never settles.

How Citizens Get Magick

Citizens of Elgana receive balanced or imbalanced magick in different ways. Either as a trait or gifted.

Trait magicks are born-with magicks. It is a trait of the species, something they are born with. A few traits of a Kattaluna is that they are born with blue fur and have sensitive vision reception (magick) meaning that the Kattaluna race are highly receptible to visions from the Guardians (although they falsely believe the visions come from the Lunar Goddess).

Gifted magicks are those which have been gifted by a higher power such as the Chief Guardian, or in the Ilvagis’ case, the King of Ilvagis.

Types of Magick

There are many different types of magick on Elgana especially if you include the magick of the species which have gone extinct.

Vision reception of the Kattaluna Race

Status in Modern Elgana: Unchanged

A magical trait only the Kattaluna race has shown. Although the leaders and their successors are the ones trained for better reception, any Kattaluna can learn to receive and interpret visions correctly. Kattalunae incorrectly believe visions come from the Lunar Goddess, however, this false belief is implanted by the Chief Guardian to protect the identities of the Guardians. (Read more: Kattaluna Culture is Shamanism-inspired)

Lunar magick

Status in Modern Elgana: Fading

A gift from the Chief Guardian to the royal Cheripian clan. The magick comes directly from the moon and the color is a soft yellow or yellow-orange. The Cheripian clan could add the magick to healing potions to make them more potent, project the lunar magick from their paws to make swords or shields, and activate runic spells. In Modern Elgana, however, lunar magick is dying as the Ilvagis restricted the Kattalunae to only use it to make healing potions which doesn’t take much effort. (Read more: Lunar Magick: Once the most powerful)

Shadow magick

Status in Modern Elgana: Unchanged

This is the counterpart magick to lunar magick. It is the magick of the Ilvagi race. The Ilvagis were born with this magick and are largely made of magick as well, so you can say that Ilvagis are a manifestation of their own magick. Shadow magick is destructive and Ilvagis also use it to shapeshift, although only who have individualism granted can shift into whatever they please. (Read more: Ilvagi – a Wiki)

Individualism granted

Status in Modern Elgana: Unchanged

Ilvagis are a collective. The only way they can gain individualism is if the King of Ilvagis deems them worthy. An Ilvagi will often use their individualism to morph into a mixture of various creatures depending on their personality. Ilvagis with individualism are stronger than those without, and they can perform more complicated spells.

Sorcerer magick

Status in Modern Elgana: Unchanged (since its first discovery)

Sorcerers use this magick to in many aspects of their lives, but they’re not lazy citizens. Spells are the only way to use Sorcerer magick and they’re spoken in Universal or an ancient runic tongue. Sorcerer magick is like lunar magick in that it needs to be used constantly or the Sorcerer might not be able to use strong spells. Unlike lunar magick, however, Sorcerer magick won’t fade if not used. It’ll just become weak. It’s also colorless, and Sorcerers don’t use potions. (Read more: The Truth of Sorcerer Magick)

Guardian magick vs Azark magick

Guardian magick is gifted to chosen citizens by the Chief Guardian and is enhanced by the Seven Stones of Virtue. It is the counterpart of the powers of the Azarks. Azark magick is the corrupted form of Guardian magick. It absorbs every other magick and becomes stronger like a black hole that sucks in other planets and expands. (Read more: What are Azarks? Don’t Say the Name)

Dead Magick

Some magick does not exist in Modern Elgana anymore. For various reasons, these magicks have been lost to legends.

Kaunlutha magick

Can be projected outside of the body in the form of flames, sparks, and fireballs but not enough to attack multiple enemies at the same time. The powerful, royal Kaunlutha could also use the magick to transform into animal lions during battle with manes that spark with flames.

Solar magick

Not dead per say, but no one on Elgana has this magick anymore. It was a gift from the Chief Guardian for Kaunlutha to use it for good. Solar magick allowed the user to control the sun, and to burn large swaths of land, hundreds of enemies, or destroy an entire house in one blow. Since it was too overpowering, it was returned to the Chief Guardian.

Aerisi magick

A gift from ice beast Kukkiri, a beast created by the Chief Guardian. The native Elganians called Aerisi, a birdkind, were given this ice-element magick to protect Kukkiri. The defeat of the beast led to the loss of the magick. And as with most native Elganians, the Aerisi also went extinct.

Language of the World

how the language was in the beginning, what happened after human invasion, how the language turned out in the end

In the end, Universal was created. Named by the Humans as Humans love to take ownership of important things they enforced onto other species. (Read more: A Fantasy Language for Everyone)
